City officials cleans-up new dumping site in Glenhills

Signs warning illegal dumpers they will be fined have also been installed.

LOCAL resident Arianne Hayes-Hill has praised a member of the Roads and Stormwater Maintenance Department for their part in clearing up a new illegal dumping site on Legacy Road (just off Malacca Road).

While illegal dumping has long been a concern for Glenhills residents, particularly at the Malacca Road/Ryde Place intersection, illegal dumpers began targeting this section of road due to its seclusion.

The road which leads to the upper section of the Malacca Road Informal Settlement and the northern depot of the eThekwini Electricity Department is shielded allowing those involved to continue dumping with no fear of repercussions.

“We are so pleased Ishen Sukai from Roads and Stormwater stepped in and cleared the area. Since we first alerted the residents to the story, more dumping had taken place at the site. It almost seems that people don’t care as long its not affecting them. Through the department’s intervention, several signs warning illegal dumpers have also been put up on light poles.

“I have also been informed that there are members from the community who have taken money to offload rubbish at this site and that is something we need to address. Now that we’ve seen the massive difference it’s a matter of working with the community and the City to curb illegal dumping because this is of benefit to everyone,” Hayes-Hill said.
