Briardene sewage spill finally fixed

"I can now cook, eat and take a walk outside. The spill affected my life since last November. I hope that it stays this way for a long time," - Hombisa Madikizela.

RESIDENTS living in Briardene Informal Settlement in Redhill can breath a sigh of relief, following the recent repair of a sewage leak on Clara Road.

The leak, which has been problematic for residents and surrounding businesses, has been an ongoing problem for about five years. On April 19, the eThekwini Municipality installed new pipes and a storm water drain, finally putting residents and businesses out of their misery.

According to Ward 36 Councillor, Shontel de Boer, the issue stems from residents placing foreign objects such as sanitary pads, disposable nappies and pieces of cloth; into the sewage line.

“Unless an educational drive is conducted on what is not allowed to be placed into the sewer line, this will always be a problem. I am going to request that someone from the Department of Water and Sanitation visits the area and does an awareness campaign,” said de Boer.

Hombisa Madikizela, from one of the families who had to endure the inconvenience of the spill, said she was ecstatic that she can finally resume her every day routine without the nauseating stench.

“I can now cook, eat and take a walk outside. The spill affected my life since last November. I hope that it stays this way for a long time,” said Madikizela.
