A BALLITO resident is urging people to get involved in a fundraising beach walk for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 41 – Ballito this weekend.
The 24 kilometre beach walk from Salmon Bay to uMhlanga takes place on Saturday, 1 May and will also see five swimmers swimming the same distance all in an effort to raise funds for the NSRI, awareness on beach pollution and get residents to enjoy the KZN coastline.
Participants can walk one or more of the three stretches on the day said organiser, Mike Gahagan.

“We start at Salmon Bay and then end in uMhlanga at the iconic Lighthouse on main beach before walking up to the event finish at the Oyster Box which will have a dedicated area set up for participants. The idea was really born out of the need to help the NSRI specifically as Covid-19 has impacted fundraising initiatives.”
“I’m asking every participant to donate R200 (R300 per husband and wife entry) directly to the NSRI (with a reference to Station 41) to ensure that the money goes to their Ballito branch.
“What is also special is that there will be five swimmers doing the same mileage as us, albeit out in the ocean with a support crew. The vast majority of people who have entered so far are only doing the first seven kilometres, but people can join whatever leg they want. Besides raising awareness on what the NSRI does, this is also about exposing people to the beauty of our coastline and encouraging people to be responsible citizens, especially when it comes to rubbish collection. One of my aims is to try and get as much plastic off the beach,” he said.

Salmon Bay to Westbrook Beach (7.5km)
Westbrook Beach to La Mercy Lagoon (7.0km)
La Mercy Lagoon to Umhlanga (10.0km)
