Bowls is the winner at Northlands Bowling Club open day

According to La Lucia resident and president of the club, Derek Rye, the open day is about showing how sociable, fun and addictive the game of bowls is.

BOWLS might be viewed as an older person’s game, but Northlands Bowling Club is hoping to change that perception with its monthly open days.

According to La Lucia resident and president of the club, Derek Rye, the open day is about showing how sociable, fun and addictive the game of bowls is.

“Our open days are held every Friday from 4pm in a bid to expose the sport to more people, both young and old. It’s an ideal way to come down to the club, roll a few bowls and get a taste for the game. It’s really a social gathering and we felt rather than have a formal open day it would be better to try and do this every Friday.

“I think it’s a great way for our members to share their knowledge and help with the basics of the game,” he said.
Rye added that the club would provide the bowls for the open days.

Local residents and sisters, Susan Reid and Janene Askew, spoke to Northglen News about why they decided to join the fun on the day.

“After a hectic week I think it’s a nice fun evening where you can meet new people and learn about bowls. I feel it is very community driven and I’ve already set myself the goal of possibly making it on to the members’ board and playing my first competition which is really exciting,” Reid said.
