Several motorists fined for illegal parking on Adelaide Tambo Drive (Kensington Drive)

The operation also saw Metro Police officers fine motorists on Mackeurtan Avenue for several traffic offences.

A TOTAL of 13 motorists were fined last week for various offences including illegal parking (parking on red lines) on Adelaide Tambo Drive (formerly Kensington Drive).

According to Metro Police spokesperson, Parbhoo Sewpersad, several motorists were fined R500 for parking on a red line and contravening the National Road Traffic Act.

The operation also saw Metro Police officers fine motorists on Mackeurtan Avenue for several traffic offences.

“We’ve received several complaints from residents about illegal parking, particularly close to the shopping centre on Adelaide Tambo Drive. What we often find is that motorists doing this have no due regard for other people’s safety.”

“Red lines indicate motorists are not permitted to stop or park in the area as it can be a danger or an obstruction.”

“If you park on a red line you are committing a traffic offence and fines are issued in compliance with the National Road Traffic Act. The fine for parking on a red line is R500 and should your vehicle be causing an obstruction, it will be towed and the costs of the towing fee and fine will be incurred by the owner of the vehicle,” he said.

Sewpersad added Metro Police had also received complaints about illegal parking in the uMhlanga CBD and in the Gateway area.

Ward councillor, Shontel de Boer welcomed the fines saying there was no excuse for motorists to park on red lines.

“The red line along the road is clearly visible,” she said.

“On Adelaide Tambo Drive, there are two centres that give you at least an hour free parking and in Mackeurtan Avenue there is also ample free parking available. The issue of parking on red lines has been a longstanding one and I urge residents to report vehicles that are obstructing traffic flow, or are parked in contravention of the Road Traffic Act or the city’s by-laws to Metro Police (031 361 0000), as many of the incidences go unreported. I would like to see more of these types of operations,” she said.
