Suspect arrested for tampering with street light pole on N2/Mount Edgecomebe interchange

The arrest comes after several street lights on the new N2/M41 interchange were tampered with and vandalised in the last few months.

A SUSPECT, caught tampering with a street light on the N2/Mount Edgecombe interchange, was arrested at the weekend by officers from Bidvest Protea Coin.

This comes after several street lights on the new interchange were tampered with and vandalised in the last year and a half.

Willem Goosen, security manager for the Umhlanga Ridge Management Association said the suspect was spotted by a member of the public.

“The member of the public was standing in the parking of a business that faced the M41 when he spotted the suspect. He immediately contacted our control room and remained on the line as we tracked the suspect down. The suspect tried to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended. He was found with copper wire in his possession and handed over to the Durban North SAPS. We encourage people to report incidents of this sort of crime. We applaud the member of the public for his efforts in helping us secure the arrest,” Goosen said.

According to Zakhele Mthethwa, Eastern region project manager) for South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL), the damage caused by the vandals is substantial on the N2/M41 exchange.

“SANRAL is in the process of procuring and implementing lighting technology which incorporates advanced security features in order to mitigate future damage. The modus operandi of the thieves/vandals has changed over time from interfering with locking mechanisms to cutting poles,” Mthethwa said.
