Suspect arrested at Effingham Railway Station for tampering with rail infrastructure

Police arrested the suspect who was found busy cutting a padlock with a steel hacksaw.

A MAN was arrested on Sunday for tampering with the overhead track switch at the Effingham Railway line.

SAPS provincial spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala said police officers deployed at Prasa/Transnet Stabilisation projects were conducting foot patrols when they received information about the suspect.

“They proceeded to the scene where a suspect was found busy cutting a padlock with a steel hack saw. A hacksaw was seized by police. A 46-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for tampering and damaging the essential infrastructure. The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon,” Gwala said.

In January this year, three suspects were arrested after they were caught stealing copper cable from a railway line in Greenwood Park worth an estimated R5 000.
