Fallen heroes honoured with memorial garden in uMhlanga

After an opening prayer staff members shared tributes in memory of those who have passed away.

NETCRE uMhlanga Hospital recently unveiled a memorial garden to honour the staff members lost to Covid-19 – the fallen heroes who selflessly served on the frontline in the midst of the pandemic.

The memorial garden was opened on Wednesday, 10 March with a ceremony attended by several staff members. After an opening prayer staff members shared tributes in memory of those who have passed away.

Speaking at the event, Human Resources Manager Asthera Kisten said: “This memorial garden has been created in memory of our fallen heroes: Nontobeko Mhlaba and Rehana Munsamy from the maternity ward. We lost Nimi Sewsunker from our finance department and Michelle Singh from ICU.”

Nursing manager of the hospital, Belinda Lehnerdt also shared a few words with the staff members gathered for the launch.

“We know that in your own hearts you are very sad because this is a real loss to each of us. Some feel it more personally than others because of the time we all shared which each of these staff members we have lost. I don’t think any of us will ever forget 5 March last year, when our whole lives changed. We think of those we have lost and their families during this time. Thank you to each one of you who continue fighting the fight during such challenging times. Thank you for everything that you are doing,” she said.

As she unveiled the memorial plaques, General Manager for the hospital, Sara Nayager said: “The fountain and the plaques are like the memories in our hearts- here to remind others what happened during this time.”
