Durban North residents call on community to support Autism run

The annual event takes place online this year, and participants can run /walk in their own neighbourhood, at a park or at their nearest beach.

RESIDENTS in Durban North and Glenhills are gearing up to participate in the Blue and You Blazing a trail for Autism virtual fun run which takes place on Saturday, 17 April from 8am to 3pm. The start of the race will be streamed live from the Blue and You Facebook page at 8am and the prize giving will be streamed at 4pm.

Durban North resident, Joy Randall said the event means a lot to her family.

“Our seven-year-old son, Brock, has low functioning Autism – so it’s a cause close to our hearts. Before Brock’s diagnosis we knew very little about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and such is the case with most people. Families with children that have ASD need understanding and support but because people don’t know about ASD, we as families often get judgement or criticism as we try to raise our kids who are on the spectrum,” she said.

Raising awareness is key to families like Randall’s.

“More children are getting diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder every year – and most of us know somebody with a child on the spectrum. Awareness helps others understand what these kids and families go through, and how they can best help and support them,” she said.

Glenhills resident, Jacqui Goldstone said her family takes part in the run because her son, Casey and Brock’s older brother are best friends.

This year, Casey and father Lloyd will be tackling the run to raise awareness about autism. “Casey did the run last year and won in his age group,” she said.

“It’s important to treat Autistic children as normal children. I would encourage the community to show their support. Autism changes the family dynamics,” she added.
