Danville’s ribbon initiative to honour Covid-19 victims

Residents, as well as staff and learners at the school have already embraced the project by tying white ribbons to the school's boundary fence in memory of lives lost.

DANVILLE Park Girls’ High School have started a community initiative called ‘Unity in the Community’ to honour those who have lost their lives to Covid-19.

Residents, as well as staff and learners at the school have already embraced the project by tying white ribbons to the school’s boundary fence in memory of lives lost.

While it is a stark reminder of the suffering caused by the pandemic, public relations officer for the school, Cathy Gilmour, feels the ribbons represent faith, hope and love.

“We’ve called the initiative ‘Unity in the Community’ and while this is a small gesture, we are hoping it will bring the community together to show there are always people to support them along the way. Each ribbon represents a life lost and those who wish to tie a ribbon can either leave it blank or write the name of their family member or a message of hope for others. Grief is deeply personal and all we can offer the bereaved is support and understanding.

“It’s been touching seeing messages in tribute to loved ones lost to the pandemic and one quickly realises how many families around north Durban and the country have been affected.”

“We are encouraging the community, who would like to participate, to collect a white ribbon from our security lady, Bonnie Madlala, at our main entrance. Ribbons can be collected from Monday to Friday between 6.30am and 5pm,” Gilmour explained.

Head girl of the school, Nala Ngcobo, who has also tied a ribbon in a shows of solidarity, said she felt the initiative was one way to honour the memory of those who’ve passed on due to Covid-19.

“I think this is a great way to unify us all as a community as over the past year we’ve all faced adversities.
This initiative is about honouring those we’ve lost to the pandemic but also showing we are all here for each other in support of those affected,” Ngcobo said.
