Join the Talk Sign campaign in support of the Deaf

THE KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society is calling on the community to support their eighth annual Talk Sign campaign.

One way to get involved is to purchase a sticker to wear for Talk Sign Day on Friday, 12 March.

Denika Pillay, Public Relations Officer for the society, said the campaign aims to raise awareness about Sign Language.

“Talk Sign focuses on establishing awareness of Sign Language among all members in society, schools, and all government departments and community health centres, to participate in the campaign and learn about Deaf Culture in order for them to communicate with Deaf persons in society,” she added.

“We appeal to the public to help contribute towards the success of our campaign by adopting the Talk Sign campaign and help us promote Sign Language,” she added.

There are several ways the community can get involved:

●Engage in the Talk Sign selfie competition online by posting a video/picture of yourself communicating in Sign language on the Talk Sign Facebook and Instagram Page. There will be prizes up for grabs.

●Buy a Talk Sign sticker for R10 and wear your Talk Sign sticker on Friday, 12 March. The society also offers educational presentations to schools.

“We encourage all schools, nationwide, to participate in the campaign by purchasing stickers and arrange an online presentation at your school. The school with the highest sale of stickers will receive 20 per cent of the proceeds,” said Pillay.
