Plan to clean-up Roadhouse Crescent

Durban Green Corridor's Jonathan Welch said a recent clean-up resulted in more than 250 bags of rubbish being collected.

A PROJECT is underway to clean-up and formalise the area on Roadhouse Crescent used by the cardboard collectors. The area, under the Connaught Bridge, used by the collectors has also seen a spike in illegal dumping in recent months.

NPO Green Corridors has been working with the City’s Parks Department and DSW, the uMgeni Estuary Conservancy and ward councillor Shontel de Boer. Through the collaboration, stakeholders have already conducted two clean-ups in the area and the hopes are now to formalise the area by putting up a fence, employing a security guard (who is one of the collectors) and cleaning up the site for the collection and sale of cardboard, metal and glass.

Jonathan Welch, technical consultant project manager of the KwaMashu Materials Beneficiation Centre (KMBC) and Green Corridors litter boom uMngeni coordinator, Siphiwe Rakgabale have been spearheading the project.

The KMBC is one of the NPO’s pilot programmes that finds solutions on how waste from various sources can be repurposed and monetized.

Speaking to Northglen News, Welch said a recent clean-up resulted in more than 250 bags of rubbish being collected.

“We are aware of the complaints from residents in the area and our plan is to clean up the pieces of rubbish and to ensure this space will be solely used for cardboard collecting. In the coming weeks a grader will create a section to allow for easier collection of the cardboard and we also intend to fence off the area. We are collaborating with DSW and the Parks Department to help the process move quicker.

“Fencing off the area will allow us to give some definition to the space and remove the eyesore from the public’s eye. The fence will act as a visual barrier and also allow us to recognise the sponsors involved in the project. We know the site has been used to illegally dump, despite a garden refuse site a few metres away. We hope by cleaning-up the area and installing a security guard we will be able to stop the dumping,” Welch said.
