Danville learners raise R56 000 for conservation

The local residents took on last year's Rhino Peak Challenge, a 21km trek to the summit of the iconic Rhino Peak (3506 metres).

LOCAL residents, Tyra Bolton and Tanzin Ferrar, raised an incredible R56 000 for conservation awareness and endangered species conservation.

The Danville Park Girls’ High School learners took on last year’s Rhino Peak Challenge, a 21km trek to the summit of the iconic Rhino Peak (3506 metres).

Through its events the challenge has raised more than one million Rand for rhino conservation as well for the conservation of the endangered species that live in the Southern Drakensberg like the Bearded Vulture and the various crane species in years gone by.

Ferrar of Mount Edgecombe and Bolton of Durban North were part of the ‘Wildlife Act’ team, said the trek was an ‘experience of a lifetime’. In order to take part in the challenge we had to raise a minimum of R10 000 each.

“I’m very proud of both Tyra and my efforts, it feels good to contribute to such a worthy cause. We are both passionate about wildlife and the environment so we were chuffed to raise R56 000. I was able to complete the trek in about five and half hours and it was great to have Tyra with me and my dad was also a participant on the day. I would certainly look into entering this event in the near future, while it was one of the toughest trails I’ve ever done it was an experience of a lifetime,” she said.

Ferrar’s sentiments were echoed by Bolton.

“My passion has always been about giving back to the community but I also have a passion for wildlife conservation and this challenge offered me an opportunity to raise awareness on our wildlife. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete the challenge because of complications with my kit due to a massive storm. There was strong wind, lashing rain and lightning and I decided to turn back at risk of catching Hyperthermia. I knew that the important part of the challenge was being able to raise the R56 000 for conservation. It was still an amazing experience and it’s definitely a challenge I’d like to tackle in the near future,” Bolton said.
