Therapy dogs to visit uMhlanga hospital

KZN coordinator for Top Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Pam Diamond said they are an NPO that use carefully selected dogs to work as therapy dogs.

LOCAL organisation, Top Dogs, Therapy Dogs are hoping uMhlanga health care workers will not be ‘dog tired’ when they arrive at work this week.

The dog handlers and their therapy dogs are planning to gather outside an uMhlanga hospital on Wednesday, 10 February from 6.30am until 8am.

They will form a line outside the hospital to welcome healthcare workers starting their shifts and cheer on those who are leaving after a long night.

Glenhills resident, and KZN coordinator for Top Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Pam Diamond said they are an NPO that use carefully selected, evaluated and trained family companion dogs to work as therapy dogs.

“We visit a number of different facilities in and around Durban including St Josephs Life care hospital, many remedial and special needs schools and frail care centres. We are in the process of training our qualified therapy dogs to visit rehabilitation wards, stroke wards and paediatric wards at Durban hospitals that have shown an interest in our programme,” she said.

“We approached Umhlanga Netcare hospital with an idea to show some solidarity and thanks to the health care workers for all that they have done during the current pandemic. They are more than happy for us to go ahead with our idea. Our plan is to form a well socially distanced line leading up to the entrance of the building during a staff shift change over. Qualified therapy dogs and handlers will be in attendance and I am hoping to recruit family and friends of our handlers to join us. Basically we would just like to give the healthcare workers, changing shift, a cheer and a thanks for all that they are doing for South Africans,” said Diamond.

The community is invited to join in to show their support, said Diamond.

The NPO is looking for more dog handlers and family dogs to join in their work. For more information, email Diamond via pam@therapytopdogs.co.za
