Durban SPCA faces dog and cat food shortage

Marketing manager of the association, Tanya Fleischer, said the SPCA uses around R5 000 worth of food to feed the animals in their care.

THE Durban & Coast SPCA has asked the north Durban community to assist with donations as their dog and cat food stocks are running dangerously low.

Marketing manager of the association, Tanya Fleischer, said the SPCA uses around R5 000 worth of food to feed the animals in their care.

“Normally, you can hardly get past the door to our food stocks without tripping over huge bags of dog and cat food piled up to the ceiling, and shelves jammed with cans, boxes and sachets of pet food. We’ve seen a marked increase in the number of pets being brought in to our SPCA by owners who simply can’t afford to keep them or are downsizing to homes where animals are not permitted.

“On the one hand, we have more mouths to feed – while on the other, we have less food to go round. It’s very, very worrying. Our only hope is that every person in Durban with a heart for animals will rally round now and help buy pet food for the dogs and cats at the SPCA,” she said.

“If residents are able to help, they can drop off food at our offices at 2 Willowfield Crescent, Springfield Park or contact us on 031 579 6500. Every sachet, can or packet can make a difference. Any brand and type of pet food is suitable,” she said.
