Men found with R5000 worth of stolen cables in Greenwood Park

According to police, the men were caught stealing copper cables from a railway line in Greenwood Park.

THREE men landed in the dock after they were caught stealing copper cable from a railway line in Greenwood Park recently. They were detained for being in possession of suspected stolen property and appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 1 February.

According to Captain Jerome Slater, spokesperson for the Greenwood Park SAPS, a member of Marshall Security and a member of PRASA (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) protection service arrested three men on 29 January at about 10.30am.

He said they were carrying a black plastic bag as they exited the railway line at the intersection of Chirs Hani Toad (North Coast Road) and Mimosa Road in Greenwood Park.

“They tried to evade them but (the members) managed to secure them. On inspection of the black plastic bag, about 25 meters of Transnet cables were discovered and they had no reasonable explanation for it,” said Slater.

The three suspects were aged between 28 and 36.  

“They were placed under arrest and handed over to Greenwood Park SAPS together with the evidence found in their possession,” said Slater. 

The stolen property was valued at about R5000. 

Detectives have profiled the three suspects in an attempt to link them to other cases.
