uMhlanga UIP warns of e-hailing and car-pooling intimidation

The UIP said it hoped to alert businesses and property owners in the area about the issue.

The uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) said they have had an increase in reports of intimidation of e-hailing services and private vehicle car-pooling in the uMhlanga and greater Durban area.

In a statement, the UIP said it hoped to alert businesses and property owners about the issue.

“If you or your staff experience intimidation of this kind we encourage you to please report it to the authorities and the uMhlanga UIP either through our hotline number 086 111 2050 or directly to Precinct Manager Dewet Geldenhuys on 084 429 8523 or email dewet@urbanmgt.co.za.”

Durban North SAPS spokesperson, Capt Raymond Deokaran, said he wasn’t aware of any recent incidents of intimidation but added there had been cases registered at the station last year allegedly involving taxi drivers.

SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) spokesperson, Sfiso Shangase, encouraged e-hailing drivers to report intimidation to the Santaco regional offices in eThekwini.

“There was a government lekgotla last year where discussions were held on formalising operations of e-hailing services. All public transport services need permits to operate and at the moment e-hailing services use an app without any permits. We condemn acts of intimidation and encourage drivers to report it to our structures. We have five regional offices across eThekwini. We as Santaco are still busy discussing the way forward and working with government,” he said.
