Uncertainty over future of uMhlanga library

The uMhlanga Library, which was previously situated on Chartwell Drive, was closed in July last year.

RESIDENTS of uMhlanga say they are seeking answers on the future of the uMhlanga Library which was closed indefinitely last year.

While all libraries across eThekwini are closed to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19), there has been no pronouncement on whether the City intends to reopen the library and where it might be situated.

Local resident, Ginny Eslick said there has been a ‘lack of consultation and communication’ from the eThekwini Municipality on the future of the library.

“The residents and surrounding community have tried on numerous occasions to find out from the municipality what progress has been made with finding a new site for the library but we have had no success at all. Where is the public consultation on where residents need the library to be? We were assured over a year ago that tender was going out for venues but in the meantime the stock of library books would be kept stored and transferred when new site was finalized . We need our library,” she said.

Ward councillor, Nicole Bollman, said she had raised the issue at a council meeting last year and was told by the City that the matter is out for tender.

“Libraries are the cornerstones of a community so as residents had mentioned previously. My biggest concern is where the library will be positioned in terms of location and its accessibility to residents. I had raised the matter last year at council and I was told it is now at a supply chain management stage. There has been no timeframe give by the City and many residents fear the library may not be reopened. There is still much uncertainty around the future of the library,” she said.
