Gang use sledgehammer to rob jewellery store at The Crescent

Two of the gang suspects were spotted with a sledgehammer and a handgun in the incident.

AN armed gang robbed a jewellery store at The Crescent on Tuesday morning.

The incident comes days after another jewellery store at Gateway Theatre of Shopping was robbed by an armed gang.

According to police this morning’s robbery took place at about 6.54am.

It is believed that between six and seven suspects, two of whom were armed with a sledgehammer and a handgun, smashed their way into the Time Zone store, which sells jewellery and watches.

Willem Goosen, security manager for the Umhlanga Ridge Management Association, confirmed the incident had taken place.

“The suspects used a sledgehammer to smash the display window at the front of the store and stole a number of items before fleeing in two getaway vehicles. Thankfully there were no injuries in the incident as the store was closed when the suspects broke in. We are working with the Durban North SAPS to try and track down those responsible,” Goosen said.

Durban North SAPS confirmed a case of business robbery had been opened.

The Crescent management confirmed the robbery had taken place.

“Thankfully no injuries were reported and the case has been handed over to the SAPS for further investigation,” the centre said in a statement.
