Church shares Christmas good ‘wool’

The unusual Christmas tree marks the spirit of giving for church-goers and donors.

DURBAN North Methodist Church will spread some Christmas warmth this year with crochet blanket donations.

The hand-made creations have been set up to form a Christmas tree in the Church as donations continue to pour in.

The unusual Christmas tree marks the spirit of giving for church-goers and donors. In January, the tree will be dismantled and the blankets will be donated to children’s homes in KwaZulu-Natal.

Madeline Pearson, a member of the church congregation, said 66 blankets have been collected so far. These will be donated to children’s homes, and some will be given to the elderly.

“We got the idea from Musgrave Methodist Church who did a similar tree last year. We decided it would be a good idea and put it out to the congregation and for the whole year, they have been making these blankets.

We also got someone to make a frame for us to put the blankets on. We have decided we will do this again next year, but we will add toys to the tree as well next year,” she said.

Each blanket is made up of 30 crochet squares, added Ilga Mitchley from the church.

“We asked everyone to include a green border. It didn’t matter what colours were in the middle, but we wanted the green boarder for the Christmas tree idea,” she said.

Reverend Brenda Timmer, of the church, is still collecting blanket donation – both crochet and shop bought.

“The ladies started in January and then once the tree went up, the blankets just kept coming in. In this year when we have been so separate, it’s lovely that people have made something like this together,” she said.
