Greenwood Park youth serve meals to the community

Funds for the initiative came from ticket sales for a talent competition at the Geenwood Park Hall.

GREENWOOD Park residents banded together to cook and serve meals to people in need across their community recently. Funds for the initiative came from ticket sales for the Dreamers Art and Talent Showcase Event, a talent competition that took place on 12 December at the Geenwood Park Hall.

Greenwood Park resident and musician, Brent Henri organised the talent competition.

“My inspiration for the showcase was to promote the youth and fellow artists, like me, who are talented without recognition. I also wanted to give my community and fellow peers a chance to showcase their talent in any form of craft,” he said.

While about 100 people attended the event, Henri said it ran at a loss.

“We spent about R20 000 and only gained about R5000,” he said.

He and his friend, Tatum Lee Gains, both had the idea to use what little they had earned to uplift their community.

“We were inspired to go out and pray for the less fortunate and feed them with whatever we could put together. She was motivated through not only our faith but her need to also support our community and people who are suffering in this time with Covid-19,” he said.

Henri said many people had joined in to make the initiative a success, including his mother, Giselle Gordon and his step-father, Joseph Gordon who invested in the project. He also thanked Marvin Estrice for transporting the meals and Muso Mbatha who hosted the event alongside him. He also thanked his aunt, Lee-Anne Smith and uncle, Jason Henri who designed the flyers and tickets for the show.
