eThekwini Municipality denies spare shortage allegations

"We are not aware of any shortages of spares, therefore the allegations are not true."

THE power outage that has been affecting the entire eMdloti community has lasted over 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisel has denied allegations that spare shortages have delayed repairs.

“We are not aware of any shortages of spares, therefore the allegations are not true,” said Mayisel.

On Tuesday residents contacted the Northglen News with complaints of frustration, saying they have been without power since Monday, 21 December at around 6pm.

A fault in a main cable is said to be the cause behind the massive outage.

Ward councillor Geoff Pullan, at the time, said city officials had told him there were no spares available and they were in the process of arranging for a senior member of council to sign a requisition order to allow the technician to buy the parts.

Mayisel blamed the fault on the humid weather.

He said the municipality has seen a number of “cable blows”, primarily in the northern region, which he attributed to the humid weather.

“Overloads are also a common factor as this is peak season for electricity consumption. We kindly request our customers to bear with us as teams are currently on site to replace the cable and restore power,” he added.
