“The damage and trauma done to children who witness domestic violence in their homes is a big concern. Children who are subjected to domestic violence in the home will have everlasting effects. It is a traumatic experience and they will suffer anxiety, depression that comes with trauma. They will need special counselling to get through it and it will take a lifetime of healing,” she said.

She said many victims of domestic abuse stay in abusive relationships believing their abuser will change.

“There are various types of abuse- there is physical abuse and verbal or mental abuse. There is also economic abuse where abusers take away the victims salary or refuse to share money. Isolating one from family is also a form of abuse and a control issue,” she said.

Prior to the domestic violence event, there was a day focused on children in the Malacca Road Informal Settlement when the Robin Hood Foundation gave a talk
