Danville Park learners to take on Rhino Peak Challenge

The 21km trek to the summit of the iconic Rhino Peak (3506 metres), has raised more than one million Rand for rhino conservation as well for the conservation of the endangered species in years gone by.

TWO local residents, Tyra Bolton and Tanzin Ferrar have been selected as ambassadors to take on this year’s Rhino Peak Challenge (RPC2020) on 12 December to raise money and awareness for endangered species conservation.

The 21km trek to the summit of the iconic Rhino Peak (3506 metres), has raised more than one million Rand for rhino conservation as well for the conservation of the endangered species that live in the Southern Drakensberg like the Bearded Vulture and the various crane species in years gone by.

In the past the event was open to three groups of 12 but this year however, organisers have decided to open the opportunity to 36 members of the broader public. Ferrar of Mount Edgecombe and Bolton of Durban North will be part of the ‘Wildlife Act’ team, who are experienced conservationists working towards saving endangered and threatened wildlife from extinction.

The duo have to raise a minimum of R10 000 each as part of their participation in the challenge.

“As ambassadors for the Wildlife Act team, one of our focuses is to create awareness of the plight of rhinos as well as other endangered species,” explained Ferrar. “I’m nervous about the challenge ahead but we’ve completed a trek similar in distance in the Drakensberg a few weeks ago and that was great preparation. It’s great to have someone like Tyra doing it with me as we can motivate each other on the trek up the mountain,” she said.

The Danville Park Girls’ High School learner said they were looking forward to the challenge ahead, a sentiment echoed by fellow learner and resident, Tyra Bolton.

“My passion has always been about giving back to the community but I also have a passion for wildlife conservation and this challenge offers me an opportunity to raise awareness on our wildlife. We have been training and running regularly leading up to the challenge, we both know it’s going to be tough but we’ve got each other’s backs. This year the Covid-19 pandemic has been about overcoming challenges and we are confident about raising the funds needed to take part in the Rhino Peak Challenge,” Bolton said.
