Durban North resident wins big at virtual Comic Con

This year however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a competition with a difference with the virtual Comic Con Africa.

IN years gone by, Durban North resident and cosplayer, Justin Walter has made a statement at Comic Con Africa winning a number of awards for his incredible creations.

This year however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a competition with a difference with the virtual Comic Con Africa.

Walter entered his cosplay creation, Korg, a giant rock like creature who befriends Thor in the movie Thor: Ragnarok and won two awards for his creation.

He also created Korg’s buddy, Miek, a larva-like insectoid creature. Walter won the Green Leaf Award (best use of recyclable materials on the Cosplay) and the Best Prop Award.

“I was extremely pleased to walk away with the best prop award for my purple buddy Miek. I spent a lot of time trying out new techniques to make him look as lifelike as possible and I am very proud of how he turned out. With the Green Leaf Award, Korg’s entire rocky exterior is made from scrap pieces of EVA foam. I’ve been hoarding off cut foam for years and I’m glad I came up with a great way to put it to good use. This was my first cosplay comp that I’ve ever done virtually. It was a new experience for us cosplayers and judges alike.

“The judges in normal situation have the opportunity to come in close and personal to inspect our costumes and this obviously wasn’t possible this year around so us as the cosplayers had to do our best to show off all our details and skills over the webcam. The judging process starts with us being in character so the judges can score our character portrayal. We are then given the opportunity to explain the various techniques we used to make our costume and point out particular details we are proud of.  Overall the process went well and I think all the cosplayers involved were very happy to have been able to still compete this year even with the current global position we are in,” he explained.

Walter also revealed his plans for next year’s Comic Con Africa

“If things improve by the time September 2021 comes around and Comic Con Africa takes place I want to enter the Crown championship of Cosplay once again. One of my long time dreams has been to build a Lich King cosplay from Warcraft 3/ World of Warcraft.  This will be my most challenging build yet but I’m excited to see how far I can push my creative boundaries,” he said.
