The clean-up was organised by the Greenwood Park/Redhill Civic Forum and Neighbourhood Watch.

MORE than 120 residents were at the heart of a clean-up that took place in Greenwood Park and surrounds over the weekend.

Volunteers and residents were joined by members of the City’s Durban Solid Waste (DSW) as well as the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department who helped remove the litter collected.

The clean-up was organised by the Greenwood Park/Redhill Civic Forum and Neighbourhood Watch who said they were blown away by the support shown by both young and old. Teams of volunteers met at the Havelock Road football grounds and were then broken up into groups tackling specific roads in the area. Greenwood Park resident and organiser, Farrah Shaik said the clean-up was part of regeneration and beautification of the area.

“We expected a few volunteers but not on this scale. We had more than 115 volunteers sign in but we also had residents who took part by cleaning sections of their residential roads. The support and love shown by everyone was phenomenal. Even Villa Park FC, who are based at Havelock Road, pitched in to help. We also had the support of the ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh.

“Over the course of the clean-up we collected more than 200 black bags of rubbish and this clean-up has exceeded all our expectations. We as the Greenwood Park/Redhill Civic Forum are so proud of everybody in the area who lent a hand, it just goes to show the heart of this community. All those who joined in were split into different groups, tackling specific roads. DSW donated hundreds of black bags, gloves and sanitisers. We are also grateful to the Parks Department who helped collect garden refuse and large branches scattered throughout the area,” Shaik said.

The organisers are currently in discussion with DSW about making these clean-ups a quarterly event to restore pride to the area.
