Durban North resident raises testicular cancer awareness

Ian Pardy is raising funds for Love Your Nuts, an NPO that aims to raise testicular cancer by educating communities about the rarely spoken about cancer.

WHETHER it’s on the hockey turf or out on the roads around north Durban, local resident Ian Pardy is playing his part to raise funds and awareness for NPO, Love Your Nuts.

The goal of Love Your Nuts is to raise awareness of testicular cancer by educating communities about the rarely spoken about cancer explained Pardy.

The Vickers Place resident is currently running through the streets of Durban to take part in a virtual run stretching 542 kilometres in 90 days.

“The virtual run distance is from Mizen Head (County Cork) in the south of Ireland to Malin (County Donegal) at the northern end of Ireland. I’ve recently passed 300 kilometres in my goal to reach the distance and through my fundraising efforts, I’ve managed to raise more than R15 000. More than that my goal is to raise testicular cancer awareness because it is rarely spoken about.

“There are some cultural taboos around it so when I run in full Love Your Nuts branded clothing I’m hoping to get the message out there and start a conversation about testicular cancer. Men are too proud to talk about this so we want to get the message out that early detection is key,” he said.

When he isn’t running, Pardy is involved with a masters hockey team called Sloths.

“We are effectively a Barbarians side but in the sport of hockey, with guys coming from all over the country. This whole journey with Love Your Nuts actually started when a sponsor pulled out just before our inter-provincial tournament (IPT) and I got hold of Love Your Nuts and told them my idea to use the platform to raise testicular cancer at hockey games. They were extremely keen and we’ve since set up a Sloths KZN team where after games with other teams we are able to spread the word and raise awareness. As a team we’ve raised more than R25 000 for the NPO. This is a moving target for us,” he said.

Pardy has also started a Given Gain page to help raise as much as possible for the Love Your Nuts campaign.
