Multiple Durban North sewage leaks spring up after repairs

Ward councillor, Shontel de Boer said the multiple leaks indicate a bigger problem.

WHILE an ongoing sewage leak on Norrie Road in Durban North was repaired this week, the repair set off a domino effect as another leak sprung up down the road. Just as the second leak was fixed, a third leak sprung up further down the road.

This according to newly elected Ward 36 councillor, Shontel de Boer.

“Initially the sewage drain was leaking at the top of Norrie Road, near the Durban North SAPS. This was fixed on Tuesday. Another leak then sprung up at number 45 Norrie Road. Once that leak was fixed, another leak sprung up at number 51 Norrie Road,” she said.

De Boer said the multiple leaks are telling of a bigger problem. She said the sewer infrastructure is ailing in the area.

“Clearly the sewer problem in Durban North is bigger than we think. It looks like a complete sewer upgrade is needed. This is similar to the water problem with the continuous water pipe bursts. The sewer system was built over 40 years ago. With the development and growth that has happened over the years, the sewer system is not keeping up,” she said.

eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said the issue of blocked manholes continues to be a problem in the City.

“This is despite the speed that the City moves with to attend to such blockages. What is compounding our woes is that some members of the public continue to dispose of foreign objects into the system causing it to block. The City does receive reports of manhole blockages from time to time and it responds to them but within a short space of time we find ourselves having to go back to square one,” he added.
