The event saw community members plant indigenous trees and pick up litter.

THE Durban North Enviro Fixers hosted a successful clean-up on Saturday, 14 November. Hosted at the Northwood Crusaders Sports club, the event also saw community members planting indigenous trees.

Helen Koch, a founding member of Enviro Fixers and chairperson for the Durban North Concervancy, said the day was a success.

“It’s fantastic that the community comes out on such a beautiful day to get involved in either the planting or the clearing of alien invasive plants or cleaning up the area. It’s fantastic that we get together and work together to make our community more beautiful,” she said.

Lindsay Balkwill was among the volunteers planting indigenous trees.

“I’ve never done any gardening before but I have absolutely loved gardening this morning. I got my hands dirty and I’m sure I’m going to be stiff tomorrow, but I have just loved it. The people here are so inspiring,” she said.

Also helping to plant trees was Sanele Zungu from Wessa, who has been working closely with Enviro Fixers to remove alien invasive plants in the area.

“Spanish reed and Litsea were populating the area. These drain a lot of water and suffocate other trees,” he said.

On the otherside of the club grounds, Michelle Addison was helping to clear up rubble and refuse.

“We picked up enough to fill 13 black bags- mostly with glass bottles, plastic bottles and general plastic. We also found clothing and toothbrushes,” she said.
