LITTER piled up along the banks of the uMngeni River at Blue Lagoon last week after the heavy rains. The EcoChamps were out collecting refuse on Friday. Teboho Kikine of the EcoChamps said they filled 100 refuse bags with litter during the clean-up.
The team works closely with Adopt-a-River to keep the area clean. Janet Simpinks, founder and director of Adopt-a-River said the team had also been working to clean up litter at Beachwood Mangroves during the week.
“Since the rains it has been an ongoing clean-up and we will continue to clean,” she said.
The team of cleaners began collecting refuse as soon as weather allowed, said Simpkins.
“As soon as rains eased the Beachwood Mangroves clean up started. The team then moved to the river ranks at Blue Lagoon. This team is sponsored by AdReach, that’s why they are still here- because a corporate company is carrying them through. One team in the rainy season is not going to be enough,” she said.
The EcoChamps returned to Beachwood Mangroves to continue clearing refuse on Saturday. Simpkins said the amount of waste depends on the volume of water when it rains.
“Every rain brings waste down. When there’s light rain we are able to control it as its trapped in the mangrove and beach, but with the heavy rains it’s harder to control,” she explained.
