North Durban Lions Club spread festive cheer with Christmas cake

Among the community projects funded by the Christmas cake sales, is an eye-testing project run at local schools.

AS the festive season approaches, the North Durban Lions Club are ready to sell their Christmas cakes, baked as part of their annual fundraising initiatives to fund their community work.

“The Lions have been making cakes for over 45 years. It’s the same recipe, belonging to the Lions, used throughout the country to sell the same 1kg cake loaded with fruit and nuts. It happens to have been made in Durban, but it’s shipped throughout the country. There is no alcohol in the cake, but many people opt to add their own alcohol to the cakes. You can buy the cake and keep it in your cupboard until Christmas,” said Avril Hobbs of the North Durban Lions.

Among the community projects funded by the Christmas cake sales, is an eye-testing project run at local schools, said Hobbs.

“We are involved with a sight project, we have a vision screener and go to schools. If children need testing, we’ve got an optometrist who tests their eyes on site,” she explained.

The Lions are also running a monthly food parcels initiative as well as a diabetes awareness campaign, said Hobbs. “Whatever comes in goes to the projects. We use money raised wherever it is needed,” she added.

The cakes, which cost R125, will be sold through the North Durban Lions website and Facebook page. For more information, call Avril Hobbs on 082 772 3654.
