Community support needed for Greenwood Park clean-up

Teams of volunteers will meet at the Havelock Road football grounds and the organisers are hoping to restore pride in the Greenwood Park and Redhill areas.

THE Greenwood Park/Redhill Civic Forum and Neighbourhood Watch have urged the community to support their clean up on Saturday, 21 November.

Teams of volunteers will meet at the Havelock Road football grounds and the organisers are hoping to restore pride in the Greenwood Park and Redhill areas.

Michael Stuart, a member of the neighbourhood watch, said in recent years he had noticed the area steadily declining into a state of decay.

“Through our partnership with the civic forum we felt as residents we needed to restore pride in the area and we felt this clean-up would be the catalyst to do that. In the past we have used the Havelock Road grounds as a base and we feel it’s an easy site to access for any volunteers coming down on the day. We’ve also had the support of Durban Solid Waste (DSW) and the parks department who have come on board. Since broadcasting the message about the clean-up, the response from the community has overwhelmingly been positive,” he explained.

Greenwood Park resident and organiser, Farrah Shaik said the clean-up was part of regeneration and beautification of the area.

“As Michael has said the idea is to get people back on to the streets. The clean-up will focus primarily on Greenwood Park and Redhill and we would love to see people from the area, as well as volunteers from all over north Durban to get involved in this community orientated project. DSW will provide black bags on the day and we are in talks about doing an education drive around waste disposal. We are also appealing to the sporting club and religious organisations to get behind us as we approach the clean-up,” Shaik said.

The clean-up takes place on Saturday, 21 November from 9am to noon starting at the Havelock Road football grounds. For more information contact Farrah – farrahshaik@gmail.com or call 082 842 3721.
