WATCH-eMdloti resident captures drone footage of humpbacks having whale of a time

Craig Condy, who is also a videographer and life coach, said he learnt how to pilot a drone while working on a yacht over the last five years.

USING drones, photographers around the globe are capturing beautiful aerial scenery offering a different perspective on the world around us.

One of those drone operators, Craig Condy, has in recent months captured dazzling footage of humpback whales and dolphins off the coast of eMdloti.

“eMdloti is a piece of heaven and we are so lucky to have such natural beauty right on our doorstep in KZN. I’ve been flying drones for the past five years and I’ve been to various countries around the world where I’ve learnt my skills. What is incredible is how it offers you a different perspective when it comes to the world around you and wildlife in particular. On this particular day, I spotted humpback whales splashing off the eMdloti coast and I decided to get some footage of them.

“I’ve never seen so much whale activity as I’ve seen in the last few months and I get super excited every time I see them. I’ve also captured manta rays, dolphins and even a feeding frenzy on a sardine bait ball just off the coast. That footage was used by an environmental television show, 50/50, which was just incredible. I’m passionate about nature and to be able to show, not only the community of eMdloti but the rest of the province, this natural beauty is a thrill each time,” he said.

Condy added that his love for the ocean and all wildlife came from a young age thanks to his grandfather and father.

“When I think of it, my entire family is passionate about wildlife. My grandfather was a wildlife vet, so I spent the majority of my time in the bush and learnt from him. My dad is a wildlife guide and both of them would be my biggest influences. I’m always in awe when I come across wildlife I’ve captured through my drone and camera over the last few years in my travels overseas. My first love though is the ocean and the animals in it often take my breath away,” he said.
