North Durban Lions stitch together funds with quilt raffle

The one-of-a-kind quilt, was made by members of Quilters By the Sea.

THE North Durban Lions Club is selling raffle tickets for a queen-sized hand made quilt- an annual fundraiser which will support the club’s community work. The one-of-a-kind quilt, was made by members of Quilters By the Sea.

“All the members of the quilting guild have a hand in it. Every year, the quilt is uniquely designed and specially made for the North Durban Lions Club,” said Avril Hobbs of the club.

The club hopes to raise about R10 000 through the quilt raffle, to support their work.

“Whatever we get in, goes out to the community. Funds will go toward all of our projects, we have a big food project where we support elderly folk. We make up to 100 food parcels every month with basic food items which we collect from the public as well as goods we buy to supplement the parcels,” said Hobbs.

“Funds are short at the club, like everywhere at the moment. Mostly the funds raised will go toward the food parcels, but we will also use some of the quilt money for our diabetes campaign. All the Lions in the greater Durban area support this campaign. Through the programme, we offer a weekend with nurses, doctors and nutritionists to approximately 20 children with diabetes, who have to inject insulin every day,” shecontinued.

The quilt fundraiser was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, added Hobbs.

“We would receive the quilt at Christmas time and then we start selling tickets. Usually by July we have raised enough money to announce a winner. This year, we received the quilt in March. We are not putting a deadline on the raffle sales as we need to keep the fundraiser open until we raise enough funds to make it worthwhile, considering the cost of the fabrics and the time put in by the quilt-makers,” she explained.

The tickets are R10 each and can be purchased via the Lions website: www.northdurbanlions.org.za.
