Swapo Road flower beds get makeover

The project will also encompass replanting the flower beds around the traffic circles as more plants are made available.

A PROJECT to rehabilitate and replant the flower beds on Swapo Road (Broadway) to help them bloom in summer is slowly taking shape.

The project has seen members of the NPO, Enviro Fixers Durban North, the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, and workers from Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) join together to give the flower beds a much-needed makeover.

Enviro Fixer member and Durban North Conservancy member, Jane Troughton, said the project will also encompass replanting the flower beds around the traffic circles as more plants are made available.

“This is a mammoth project but we are changing the layout of every single flower bed on Swapo Road. Much of what we’ve planted so far has come from our own gardens and from donations from residents in the area. This is an ongoing project so we will need to fill in the gaps of the various flower beds as we can,” she said.

“The plants and shrubs we’ve already planted have already taken hold and flowered in some spots. We have to be extremely water wise and we are currently planting for seasonality, so there will always be something in flower. Every flower bed we’ve tended to has some structure to it and I’m sure it’ll take effect in the coming weeks. We’ve planted hundreds of wild garlic plant, several aloe species, grey-leaved euryops (Euryops pectinatus) and succulent bush senecio (Senecio barbertonicus) to name a few,” she said.

The local resident added that the reactions from the public and other residents in the area have been encouraging.
