Suspected cable thief arrested in uMgeni Park

The suspect, aged 30, was spotted carrying a black bag with electricity cables on Anthony Road.

A SUSPECTED cable thief was arrested and detained at the Greenwood Park police station on Monday morning.

The suspect, aged 30, was arrested on Anthony Road in the uMgeni Park area at about 6am, confirmed Captain Jerome Slater, spokesperson for the station.

“The suspect, who was carrying a black plastic bag with cables, was stopped by security officers patrolling the area. After searching the suspect they found around 25 metres of overhead electricity cables in his possession with an estimated value of R33 000. He could not account for the property in his possession and was placed under arrest. He is due to appear in court this week,” Slater said.

The arrest comes more than a week after a local resident voiced his concern over the ongoing theft of copper cables along the railway line on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road).
