STAFF at the Vodacom cell phone store at Kensington Square Shopping Centre were held up in an armed robbery on Sunday afternoon.

Staff were tied-up with cable ties while the suspects made off with at least 25 cell phones.

According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the Durban North police station, three suspects, one of whom was armed with a pistol, initially entered the store pretending to be customers just after midday.

“The suspects pretended to be interested in taking out a contract. One of the suspects then produced a firearm and asked the member of staff to go into the manager’s office. The suspect then kept watch while his colleagues demanded the keys to the safe. The suspects then tied up the members of staff with cable ties and proceeded to fill the bag with cellphones. Approximately 25 cellphones were taken. The suspects then fled on foot and no one was injured in the incident,” he said.

In a statement, Kensington Square management confirmed the incident had taken place.

“We at Kensington Square are extremely dedicated to keeping our centre safe and incidents like this are very unfortunate and frustrating for all of us. We are just immensely thankful that no one at the particular shop was injured and that no member of the public or any other tenant was either. It is of our opinion that this was a highly organised hit, however only SAPS will be able to confirm this and hopefully there will be a positive outcome for all parties.”
