‘Safeguard yourself against theft,’ say Greenwood Park SAPS

Being vigilant of your surroundings can safeguard you against crime.

THE Greenwood Park SAPS has urged business owners and homeowners to be vigilant. This warning comes after an increase in residential and business burglary as well as theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles.

Spokesperson for the Greenwood Park SAPS, Captain Jerome Slater said there are steps residents and business owners can take to prevent burglary, theft and robbery.

“We urge business and homeowners to remain crime conscious and to put in place every preventative measure to stop criminals from breaking in or committing robberies,” he added.

Slater urged the community to ensure that they have a good security system at their home or business premises.

“Request your security company to increase visits and inform them when you are away. Link up your CCTV to your cellphone to view your premises at anytime. Install burglar guards on doors and windows. Place motor vehicle steering wheel on lock, secure doors and windows, activate alarms and install tracking devices,” he said.

Being vigilant of your surroundings can safeguard the community against crime on the streets, he added.

“Observe your surroundings and if you are not safe, drive to the nearest police station or call 10111. Avoid using your cellphone while driving without a car kit, this will allow you to be more vigilant of your surroundings. Avoid making your cellphone visible when walking in public,” he said. 

More tips:

*Be vigilant at ATMs.

*Have emergency contact numbers easily accessible. 

*Avoid fighting back if you are in a vulnerable position. 

*Be involved in community policing and chat groups.

*Report suspicious individuals and vehicles.

*Fit tracking devices on property such as laptops and bicycles.
