Sea Cow Lake residents bemoan rubbish left to rot

The rubbish pile is now a breeding place for maggots and flies says residents.

RESIDENTS of Crow Place and the nearby informal settlement have expressed their disappointment with the City over the failure to remove piles of rubble and rubbish that has piled up on the side of the road.

They say the rubbish pile is now a breeding place for flies, maggots and cockroaches.

What is more, the initial build up of rubble was due to a shack fire more than a month ago.

At the time, new materials were delivered by the City to help rebuild homes, however the old burnt and hazardous rubble was left in a heap on the road. Since then rubbish bags have been added to the pile leading to a foul ordour permeating the road as well as rats feeding off the rotting food.

Kishorie Dubaree, said she was fed-up that it has been now a little over three weeks since the pile of rubble and rubbish was left standing.

“Nothing has been removed yet and I’ve seen rats feeding on some of the black bags which are squashed underneath the rubble from the shack fire.”

“The stench is unbearable and on hot days there are hundreds of flies swarming around. We were told by Durban Solid Waste (DSW) that they would bring in a TLB with a tipper truck but since then nothing has been done. It’s an extremely dangerous situation for all of us who live here especially for the children as there are rusted nails protruding from timber pieces of the burnt down shacks,” she said.

Fellow resident, Thunyelwa Mlobeli, said the community is also unhappy with the rubbish pile.

“My home is closest to this pile and I’m worried because I’ve seen rats and cockroaches. It’s an unhealthy situation as I have two young children and I fear for them. All we would like is for this matter to be taken care of,” she said.
