Glenashley cat sanctuary returns to market fundraising

The sanctuary's vet bill runs at an average of R15 000 to R20 000 each month.

THE Kingdom Cat Sanctuary in Glenashley will resume fundraising with their stall at the Golden Hours Market after a tough financial struggle during the as Covid-19 lockdown caused funds to dry up.

The sanctuary cares for between 140 and 150 cats on a monthly basis said Greg Bower who runs the sanctuary with his wife.

He added that the sanctuary’s vet bill runs at an average of R15 000 to R20 000 each month.

“Covid-19 affected our fundraising in a big way, we usually raise funds at the Golden Hours Market where we have a stall. That was cancelled and I think everyone was feeling the pinch as a lot of our donations dried up. It has been very difficult,” said Bower.

In addition to vet bills, the sanctuary needs to raise funding to feed the cats in their care.

“We always need cat food, especially wet cat food for our older cats. We take in mainly adults and we have a couple of 19-year-olds here. They prefer the wet food. Food has been an issue with lockdown. The other issue is the number of people who surrendered their cats because they couldn’t afford to look after them. We’ve had a lot of new cats come in. We have had to turn a tremendous amount of cats away because we are at full capacity,” said Bower.

The sanctuary currently has several cats available for adoption.

To support the sanctuary visit their stall at the Golden Hours on Sundays between 10am and 3pm.

“We sell donated goods, such as clothes, books, CDs Dvds and ornaments. There are 85 different traders at the market, the music is back, it’s an amazing atmosphere. There’s a supervised play area for children and it’s pet friendly,” said Bower.

The sanctuary also accepts donations.
