Firearm amnesty extended at Greenwood Park SAPS

The amnesty creates an opportunity for members of the public to surrender illegally possessed firearms without fear of being prosecuted.

GREENWOOD Parks SAPS has encouraged people to come forward and surrender illegal firearms as the firearm amnesty period has been extended to 31 January 2021. 

The amnesty, which began on 1 August, aims to prevent criminal activity associated with firearms. 

Captain Jerome Slater, spokesperson for the Greenwood Park SAPS, said illegal and unwanted firearms should be surrendered at the Greenwood Park police station.

“SAPS are urging the community to utilise this extension as a opportunity to free themselves from possession of illegal and unwanted firearms and to encourage any person to do the same.This will avoid criminals from having an opportunity to be in possession of such firearms and avoid innocent persons being harmed. Members at Greenwood Park SAPS are ready to assist anyone who requires help with this process,” he said.

The amnesty creates an opportunity for members of the public to surrender illegally possessed or unwanted firearms, ammunition and/or firearm parts to the South African Police Service without fear of being prosecuted for the unlawful possession of the items.
