Frustration as vandalised Durban North water meter leads to leak

The local resident was left without water for six days after her water meter was vandalised.

KENNETH Kaunda Road (Northway) resident, Pippa Edmonds, has expressed her frustration after her water meter was vandalised last week.

Edmonds was one of 20 cases of vandalism across north Durban where water meters outside residents’ properties were targeted by unknown person/s.

Residents on Eastview Road, Church Road, High Ridge Road, Adelaide Tambo Drive (Kensington) and Kenneth Kaunda Road were among those affected.

Edmonds said the cutting of the inlet pipe feeding her water meter was cut leaving her without water for six days.

A day later municipal contractors were able to restore water flow to her home, however a leak developed leaving of pool of water which is now seeping under her boundary wall.

“The leak is quite steady and my concern now is if this steady stream of water, which is flowing freely isn’t stopped, then my boundary wall will be affected. I’m deeply frustrated as this was caused by the vandalism to our water meter. I’m tempted to ask the municipality to move our meter inside our yard as I’m afraid this could happen again,” she said.

Acting ward 36 councillor, Shontel de Boer, said she still could not understand why the water meters had been damaged a week after several cases were reported.

“To leave a resident six days without water is just unacceptable. I had escalated this particular issue a number of times to senior officials in the water department. The original repair obviously wasn’t done properly as a secondary leak is now putting Mrs Edmonds’ wall at risk of collapse. Thousands of litres of water were wasted because of this blatant act of vandalism,” she said.
