Greenwood Park SAPS secure 173 arrests in two months

The arrests were made over July and August and the station has praised the involvement of the community in fighting crime.

GREENWOOD Park SAPS station commander, Mbongeni Mngadi, has praised his officers’ efforts for the past two months which has seen 173 people arrested for various crimes.

According to the station spokesperson, Captain Jerome Slater, police made the arrests in cases ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape, domestic violence, prostitution and theft out of vehicles to name a few in July and August. 

“The Greenwood SAPS members have worked in partnership with security forces and the local community to fight against crime which has yielded these results. Excellent detective work has also played a significant role in these arrests and recoveries, as well as visible police and intelligence driven operations,” he explained.

“We are also warning the public to refrain from reporting false cases, as this constitutes a crime. We arrested five people for defeating the ends of justices for false cases for insurance fraud. We also urge the public to keep a record of serial numbers for items in the event of reporting a crime or loss.”

Speaking about the spike in specific crimes in the area, Slater said the station has noticed an increase in housebreaking, business break-ins, theft of motor vehicles and carjacking.

“We appeal to the community to be vigilant and to take proactive and preventative safety measures to avoid being easy targets for opportunistic criminals. We urge business and homeowners to remain crime conscious and to put in place every preventative measure to stop criminals from breaking in or committing robberies,” he said.
