Beachway BMX track a hit with community

The restoration project on Beachway has also seen members of the community reclaim the small parcel of green space with the newest addition, being the BMX track.

AN upliftment project by local NPO, Enviro Fixers Durban North to clean-up and beautify a section of Beachway has paid dividends with the addition of a BMX track.

More than two weeks ago, Enviro Fixers joined volunteers in the neighbourhood to remove alien invader plants, plant indigenous plants, prepare flower beds and clean-up the area which in recent times had been prone to illegal dumping. By the end of the project more than 100 bags of rubbish had been collected.

The restoration has also seen members of the community reclaim the small parcel of green space with the newest addition, being the BMX track.

Local resident, Chris Charlton-Jones, who was involved in initiating the track, said the project has brought the community closer.

“The work by Enviro Fixers to clean up the area was just fantastic and so I spoke to one of the ladies involved, Vanessa Knight asking what she thought of a BMX track being built. She was all for it so myself and a bunch of kids got started digging away with spades and pick axes. We then sent out a message on the community WhatsApp group asking if anyone had a Bobcat. I honestly didn’t think anyone would respond and a kind man by the name of Hash from City Lightz responded and said he would happily help us out. Another man donated sand. Hash also brought in a few labourers who were all amazing and with help from the local dads too, the track was almost completed within a day. It’s been a huge hit with my sons who love BMXing and many of the other children in the neighbourhood. The sense of community this project has brought about is incredible. Before this I didn’t know many of the children or their parents in the area, now I do. Most afternoons, this track is full with boys and girls having fun. My son has dubbed the group the Beachway BMXers. It has really brought the community closer,” he said.

Charlton-Jones said he would be looking at making a few adjustments to the pumps and ramps.
