Signs of Covid-19 cases plateauing in the province, says KZN premier

KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala said there has been a 'remarkable reduction' in the number of infections in the province in the last week.

FOLLOWING a surge in Covid-19 cases which saw KwaZulu-Natal reaching the peak of the pandemic and occupying the number two spot nationally, KZN premier Sihle Zikalala, has welcomed early emerging trends that the infection rate is approaching a plateauing phase.

“In the past few days we have witnessed a remarkable reduction in the number of infections. The province currently stands at a total of 109 332 cases, 1 949 deaths and 85 055 recoveries. Worryingly, four of our districts still contribute the highest number of cases in the province, those being King Cetshwayo District, eThekwini, uMgungundlovu and Amajuba.

“We are monitoring the impact of inter-provincial travel, the re-opening of schools and more sectors of the economy. This carries with it a high risk of person-to-person transmissions. We appeal to our people to fully embrace our new normal,” he said. Zikalala appealed to residents to not sit on their laurels.

“We must continue following guidelines such as wearing masks in public at all times, washing our hands regularly with soap and water or sanitising our hands with alcohol-based hand sanitisers,” he said.
