Plan to restore Heather Grove following collapses

According to ward councillor Bobby Maharajh, the plan to rehabilitate the road will take around six weeks.

RESIDENTS of Heather Grove may have to wait a little while longer before the road, which was badly damaged by a collapse, is repaired and restored.

Last week, ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh called for a meeting with senior water department technicians to visit the site to look at a possible repair and recovery plan to aid the residents on the Redhill road, some of whom have not been able to access their driveways.

More than a month ago, a burst pipe, which led to a persistent water leak caused the lower half of the road, near the intersection of Effingham Road to cave in. While the pipe was repaired another collapse further up caused yet another collapse rendering the road unusable.

City workers then filled the road with sand to fill in the gaping holes, however, the road remains in a state of disrepair.

The rubble from the damaged tar remains lying on the pavement of the road and much of the sand filled in the holes has begun to wash away due to rain.

Maharajh welcomed the discussions by the officials on Friday, saying he was hopeful that work to restore the road and prevent a further collapse would take place timeously.

“We’ve been given a turnaround of a little more than six weeks but the discussions were fruitful. The officials have a plan to address the leak which has led that portion of the road to collapse four times in the last 18 months. My primary concern is for residents using this road, I don’t want a case of someone being seriously injured by a road collapse.

“The plan sounds solid and I’ve been given the commitment by the officials that the spoil or rubble lying on residents’ banks and on the side of the road will be removed sometime this week. I’ve worked with these officials who were part of the Sea Cow Lake Road repair which has been a success. I’m hopeful, once all the work is complete, that residents can use the road safely,” he said.

The initial part of the project will see the water pipe alignment change while the second half will involve the City’s roads department to retar and resurface the road.
