Guinea pigs found in sealed box at Glenhills dump

One of the guinea pigs had a severe skin condition which required veterinarian attention.

TWO live guinea pigs were found at the Malacca Road Dump in a sealed box on Friday and taken to the Riverside Veterinary Clinic for treatment. Veterinarian, Dr Kerry Easson said the box was sealed completely with tape.

“There were holes in the box but if it was in the sun, the guinea pigs could most certainly have overheated. The one guinea pig had a severe skin disease with loss of hair over a large portion of its body. They have both been treated for mites and have had their very long nails clipped. They have eaten non stop since arriving here at the clinic. We expect an uneventful recovery. They have already been adopted into an approved home and once the skin issues have healed they will both be neutered,” said Easson.

She said the skin condition, which required a visit to the vet, may have led to them being discarded.

“Any animal is a commitment for their life, and if you are not willing to take that commitment on then don’t get the animal,” she said.

Easson urged pet owners not to dump unwanted pets.

“There are options available. Contact local rescue groups, hand over to the SPCA or even take to your vet and request euthanasia. Anything is better then dying in a box, or tied to a tree, or dumped on a road, or whatever other uncaring options people might come up with,” she said.

The matter has been reported to the SPCA.
