Residents despair over state of Redhill road

Residents and ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh have asked the City to urgently intervene by replacing the pipes on the road.

RESIDENTS of Heather Grove in Redhill had to endure yet another week of their road being out of commission.

This comes after a significant structural collapse occurred on various sections of the residential road in Redhill more than two weeks ago.

According to resident, a burst pipe which led to a persistent water leak caused the lower half of the road, near the intersection of Effingham Road to cave in, leaving five residents trapped in their homes and unable to use their driveways.

Days later another section of the road collapsed just metres from the first site collapse.

This was the fifth time the road had experienced some sort of structural collapse in the last 18 months.

They have called on the City to replace the old asbestos pipes along the section of the road which has led to the damage.

Residents and ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh have asked the City to urgently intervene by replacing the pipes on the road.

“Currently what the City has done at the site of the first collapse is fill it with sand, which is not good enough. I’ve seen a couple of vehicles drive on that section but at this point I would advise against it. I will be meeting with members of the Roads and Stormwater Department to find a way forward. I think the City needs to look at replacing the old asbestos pipes and possibly look at placing the pipes in a different layout to avoid similar situations in the future.

“At the site of the second collapse I’m appalled the City has left rubble and sand all over the resident’s driveway preventing her from leaving her home. Speaking to the residents this week, they feel there will be more pipe bursts in the next few months which then begins to affect more and more people. This cannot go on like this,” he said.
