uMgeni Park resident damages car after hitting packet filled with bricks

The local resident said she wanted to warn motorists in the area following the incident.

A LOCAL resident has warned motorists to be vigilant while driving in the uMgeni Park area.

This comes after she damaged the tyre of her vehicle on Anthony Road last Friday.

Danielle Roberts was driving along the narrow stretch of Anthony Road when she spotted a packet lying on the ground.

Unable to swerve, Roberts drove over the packet thinking it was full of rubbish. The packet however was filled with two bricks.

The impact caused the front driver tyre to burst immediately and her vehicle was instantly immobile.

“It was about 7am and luckily there was someone behind me who called her husband who helped me change my tyre. I didn’t know at first what I’d hit so I went over to the packet and to my horror discovered two bricks wrapped in a plastic bag.

“One of the pieces of the brick I’d driven over had landed in the bushes on the side of the road. I just wanted to warn residents and drivers in the area to be vigilant. I’m not sure if this was someone playing a prank or something more sinister, like an attempt to rob a motorist. It’s really dreadful. A cyclist who came by later said he’d noticed the packet on the road at about 5am that same morning. He also thought it was rubbish,” she said.

Brian Daish of the uMgeni Neighbourhood Watch said he was aware of the incident.

“There aren’t any cases that I’m aware of in our area where this tactic has been employed. I think its best to avoid packets left on the road and if possible to drive around or swerve out of the way,” he said.
