Crime stats: Sexual assault cases increase

Sexual offence cases and cases of murder in KZN have increased significantly, said Police Minister, Bheki Cele.

CASES of rape and sexual assault have increased across South Africa. This was revealed by Police Minister, Bheki Cele, when he presented the crime statistics on Friday.

Cele said of concern was the increase in sexual offences which increased by 1.7 per cent.

“This crime has terrorised most households and communities as most of these crimes happen behind closed doors and only publicised when the offence has been committed and in most cases when victims of crimes are no more.

“Awareness campaigns on gender-based violence and femicide must be intensified; private sector and gender activists’ organisations must work together with government to defeat the scourge and expose perpetrators,” he said.

Speaking on KZN, Cele said the province has recorded the highest number of murders out of all nine provinces, which increased by 10.6 per cent.

KZN also recorded an increase in sexual offences and trio crimes.

Cele added the crime stats will now be released quarterly to allow for timeous intervention measures. “The crime stats reflect a slowing down in the increase in violent crimes, we aren’t were we want to be,  but pleased with some stabilisation,” he added.
